Versions of the following have appeared online regularly, since 1992, as a feature of the FYI France
enewsletter, ISSN 1071-5916, which is distributed for free via email every month except August. Enewsletter
subscriptions may be obtained via email request to: kessler@well.sf.ca.us. The
list contains a selection only: additional online digital information resources develop in France every week, on the
Minitel and the Internet -- one can be sure only that there are more, not fewer, than what follows online in France now.
Here this file is one of a number made available -- hopefully attractively, all in one place, and relevant to
libraries and online digital information work in France and Europe -- as part of FYI France (sm)(tm), an online
service to which anyone can subscribe by postal mailing a check for US $45, payable to Jack Kessler, to PO Box 460668,
San Francisco, California, USA 94146 (site licenses also are available): please write your email address on the front of
your check. Please email suggestions for improvements to me at
kessler@well.sf.ca.us
Resources which appear online in languages other than French are noted.

* Actes Sud
- W3: http://www.actes-sud.fr/index.htm
- "The birthplace of Actes Sud was the valley of the Rhône. It was
in fact near Arles that the publishing house was founded, in 1978. At the
beginning, and at the inspiration of the Atelier de Cartographie
Thématique et Statistique (ACTES) of which it was a product, Actes Sud was
installed in a shepherd's hut in Paradou, a little village in the
-- and all of it in Arles, which certainly is
worth a visit, and it sounds as though "Le Méjan" might be as well...
centre de presse et de rencontres" / Today, Arles still is the head office
of Actes Sud, although in Paris there is a Press and Conference center.
And now, in its 17th year, Actes Sud -- which now maintains a catalog of
more than 600 titles -- includes 45 editors, of which a good number travel
regularly to Paris. [sounds as though they are reluctant -- who can blame
them, if they live and work in Arles?]

distributed through bookstores, on documentary, artistic and literary

- "...in the South of France" is an understatement: if you look on a map
of Drôme, between the Valentinois and the Vercors but south -- just
above the Vaucluse (is it in the "enclave de Vaucluse"?) and between the
Aygues and the Lez -- you may find it. Sounds better than the walk to
work along Madison Ave....

- Postal: Culture d'oc, 31, avenue de l'Abbaye , 12000 Le
Monastère -- "a small village near Rodez", I am told by Joel
Vayssie -- sounds très pittoresque.
- I personally would love to read something online in "occitan": long -
standing love affair with Eleanor of Aquitaine. (Did she know "occitan",
anyone? JK).
- I am including this site at least for its completely fascinating
description (from the urec.fr server) -- "rodez, aveyron, midi - pyrennees
and also in hopes that others will tell me exactly who these people are
and what they are doing. JK.
- The following table is reproduced from the site, containing just a bit
of "Occitan" --
FRANCAIS CULTURE D'OC, association loi 1901, a
Histoires comme ça /Istòrias aital (just so stories), ainsi
Kipling : Historias aital / Histoires comme ça (Just so stories, e
ENGLISH CULTURE D'OC, a non profit society has
published in a bilingual edition (French / Occitan) Los contes de Kipling
Just so Stories (Istorias aital / Histoires comme ça), and The
Jungle Books, by the same author. |
For my own and everyone's general information: from the site --
"L'occitan es una lenga. Una lenga rica, numericament tan rica coma
l'anglés e dos còps mai que non pas lo francés : amb sos derivats compta
pas mens de 450 000 tèrmes..."
And be sure to visit another, related, FYI France resource, The
Occitan Language Page .
One can read "A Short Occitan Tutorial" at http://www.multimania.com/simorre/oc/presocfr.htm
, but I still don't really know whether Eleanor of Aquitaine spoke it...

- The Documentation Française is THE source for those hard - to -
get / un - profitable - to - publish / highly - useful studies and
statistics about France, which the normal commercial publishers even in
France and certainly elsewhere simply will not touch. More than the UK
HMSO and the US GPO: it would be, in a country in which the
government represents such a larger percentage of the national GDP, and in
which "la patrimoine culturelle" reigns supreme.
- Highly recommended for research papers, masters' / doctoral theses,
any statistical work.

* Guénolé, Editions
- W3: http://www.fc-net.fr/guenole/
- Apparently a little commercial publishing startup, completely charming
as the French so often are able to manage: "Editions Guénolé
was created in 1989 by two teachers, Nicole Tournier and Daniel Ronfort,
working with their students at Albert Camus middle school in
Besançon (France). It was established to encourage, in teenagers,
the love of reading and of writing in allowing them to discover the entire
'chaîne du livre' [translation, anyone? JK], through their management of
their own small publishing house. This very original teaching method won
the Prix Diderot-Universalis of 1994 for the entire project." [tr.by JK].
- Current titles (19 published so far) include:
- Guénolé, le roman aux 101 auteurs, "Un multimilliardaire
américain annonce l'arrivée de son fils chez ses cousins francs-comtois.
La stupéfiante nouvelle va déclencher, dans cette famille modeste, une
cascade d'événements drôles, émouvants et parfois tragiques." 99 FF;
de joyeux élèves bisontins venus enquêter sur place." 180 FF;
'd'époque', la maquette du livre se veut un pastiche des ouvrages du
XVIIIe siècle. Documents d'archives." 130 FF;
Documents d'archives."
110 FF.

- 2 allee de Longchamp, Suresnes, 92281
- "HAVAS advertising agency, founded in 1835 by Charles Louis Havas, set up an
advertising consultancy department in 1958, under the name of HAVAS CONSEIL. This department
became a corporation in 1968.
"In 1975, HAVAS CONSEIL became the holding company EUROCOM, grouping together a number of
subsidiaries. EUROCOM was first listed on the Paris Bourse in 1982. The group developed
rapidly in all fields of communication (advertising, but also marketing, sales promotions,
public relations, design, etc.) and began its international expansion..."
- Excerpt from "données économiques de l'édition française", in Yahoo
Encyclopédie:
http://fr.encyclopedia.yahoo.com/articles/ni/ni_1690_p0.html
http://fr.encyclopedia.yahoo.com/index.html
- So -- alors -- HAVAS, NASDAQ HAVS, on 12/23/2003 closed at $5.58 on a 52wk low of $2.26
and high of $5.69, market capitalization $1.65 billion, valuation $2.55 billion, revenues
(ttm) $2.11 billion... not your "mom 'n pop" little bookpress...

- An ambitious - sounding site, admirable if they achieve what they
appear to be setting out to do: text finding and text publishing and text
buying / selling and econferencing and directory and keeping up with all
of the constant changes in all of this... I have not checked it all out on
this site myself but, like I said, an admirable - sounding effort.
- One curious feature: a ".COM" address located in France, "Saint

Name system never ceases to amaze me...
- And no I don't know how my FYI France search engine, or
any other system, is going to file "Pl@net": better ask Will Hearst at

- Usenet ejournal / E - Zine; "not a trademark. Just a non periodical

encryption, French telecoms law, interviews, article titles like
"Microsoft Network and silly French laws"; in French and English.

* Traverses
- W3: http://www2.centrepompidou.fr/traverses/
- Ejournal of the Centre National d'Art et de Culture
Georges-Pompidou, Paris
- "As a place of development and experimentation for all creative
disciplines (literature, music, visual arts, photography, video,
architecture, design, cinema, new technologies), the Centre National
d'Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou has always prioritized the
multidisciplinary approach. As a venue for exhibitions, meetings,
performances and debates, it has always advocated maximum access for
the general public. But the Center is not only a showcase for modern
creation, it is also a cultural production center in its own right with
its own, distinct publishing policy. For all these reasons, the Center
is in a unique position with regard to multimedia publishing."
- "The Center is now planning to create a new type of periodical
bringing together a variety of approaches and media. The idea is to extend
the scope of the old publication, Traverses, which looked at man's
relation to his environment, culture and production as reflected in
various themes or problems, and confronted with differing viewpoints and
disciplines. By going further into the new technologies, its successor
will set out to appeal to a younger and more varied audience in addition
to the traditional readership of Traverses, which consisted mainly of
intellectuals, teachers, artists, researchers and students."
- "The founding principle of this new publication is that we are today
seeing a radical shift in the relations between the different spheres of
knowledge. This is due both to the decline in the opposition between the
"exact" sciences and the human sciences, and to the transformation of the
means of access to knowledge as a result of the new communication
technologies. And yet there remain barriers between the various
disciplines. One of the aims of this publication will be to explore the
multidisciplinary idea in and through the new technologies, to serve as an
experimental platform for the creation of a new arena of knowledge,
capable of setting up interactions between different disciplines, works
and techniques, though without seeking to imitate the encylopaedia. The
idea is not to build a "consensus" between the arts, sciences, technology
and the various schools of philosophy, but to generate productive tensions
of meaning between their different languages."
- "We are currently looking into the question of language. Should we
offer a publication that is entirely bilingual (French and English)? Or
one which reflects its global reach by publishing contributions in their
original language as well as in French? Should we offer a full French
translation alongside the original version of texts by non-French
contributors, or just abstracts?"
