Publisher's description:
The curators of the ninth Lyon Biennial approached the task of mapping the moment in contemporary art playfully: by commissioning a polyphonic history and geography book. With 70 "players" from around the world, the "game" of how to define the decade unfolded via a series of delegations, invitations and programs in which artists proposed their responses, and critics and curators sequenced and challenged them, in turn suggesting artists of their own. Reframing the unfolding present from within, creatively rethinking the role of the artist as well as that of serious play, and reconsidering the now-ubiquitous and decreasingly authoritative biennial exhibition, these myriad voices, framed by only a few rules, became participants in an exercise in collective self-determination. This lavishly illustrated publication, designed by the renowned Parisian firm M/M and edited by Biennial curators Hans Ulrich Obrist and Stephanie Moisdon, includes previously unpublished essays by Michel Houellebecq, Okwui Enwezor and Ralph Rugoff, and functions as a manual for "a decade yet to be named a present that is endlessly arriving."

Note: Library acquisitions policies / budgets often forbid the consideration of "tour guides", and keeping up with the touring industry bibliographically is a fool's errand. Yet, as with Wikipedia or any encyclopedia and perhaps even moreso, the "tour guide" or "travel writing" often is the best first-stop for research: not the last word, but the place where ideas and interests often first occur and are initially pursued. So, with that caveat, some of the latest-date good guides to Lyon and things Lyonnais appear here too.

Note: The Monts du Lyonnais are sufficient reason, alone, to visit France and enjoy Lyon. The countryside there, and the incredible views out over the city of Lyon's plain across the Rhône to the distant Alps, are sufficient reason for living -- and if you add the local wine and cheese and people to the mix it all becomes something really special. And the Beaujolais is a nice place to go hiking, too...

Publisher's description: [for an English translation see next entry]

Publisher's description:
In a historical monument like Saint-Jean, highly symbolic of a community as a whole, all sorts of events have occurred over the century... The author has lent his imagination to some of those who witnessed the development of the Cathedral and its vicinity, from its reconstruction at the beginning of the 12th century to its role today. Here are the accounts of Guichard, the late 12th century archbishop and builder, Arnoud de Collonges, the Dean of the canon's chapter during the Ecumenical Council of 1245. Henriet de Nivelle, the master glazier who completed the new rose window on the West front in 1393, Giovanna Albizzi, a member of the Florentine oligarchy, severely shaken by the ravage of the religious wars, Antoine Bellet, the city's consul at the time of the jubilee of Saint John in 1666 and Joseph Fesch, the first archbishop to be appointed following the turmoil of the French revolution. Men and women of their time, they relate their thoughts and feeling during one of the key moments in the history of the Cathedral and of the city of Lyon.
Art historian Claudio Galleri is conservator of the print collection in the Municipal Library of Lyon. He also worked for an extended period for the Italian national monuments record. He has published numerous articles, monographs on artists, and two routes for a guide to Lyon on foot, Le Piéton de Lyon.

Publisher's description:
[tr. JK] "At the end of the 1980's the surface began to crack. Catholic and industrious and self-sufficient Lyon was no more. This is because those who make it work, who live it, are not the same who did so before. Today one out of every two Lyonnais was not born in the city. Lyon now dares to regard itself objectively, to embellish itself, and to put itself forward. Architects and urbanists re-think and re-design the place. New solutions nibble at the old edges, and confront the centuries-old institutions. Art is out in the streets. The famous chefs forget about "les quenelles" and "la bienséance". The changes though are not uniform. While at the center Lyon and Villeurbanne are bursting with new energies, the social divide broadens out in the suburbs. On these latter barren grounds various contestants battle: militant social workers, free political spirits. Meet twenty project promoters who open doors, build things, displace things, invent, influence... They do not have power, in any institutional sense of the term, but they have better: they have a grip on reality, an understanding of the people. Lyon viewed by several of its agents of change."

Publisher's description:
[tr. JK]
"A synthesis, both classical and accessible, of all of the history of Lyon since its origins...
"Inventive, creative, cosmopolitan, the city of Lyon broke a long time back with the legendary coldness which for so long had characterized it. Situated at the crossroads of the Germanic and Latin worlds, Lyon was constructed over the centuries in spite of its difficult urban geography. Founded by one of Caesar's lieutenants, the city became in turns the seat of the first national parliament, the capital of the Burgundian kingdom, a city of Provence, then a free city of the Holy Roman Empire.
"Lyon became French during the 14th century, only 700 years ago. Ever since, it has cultivated its distinctive 'differences'. These have turned up in commerce, in printing, in the cinema, in the silk and chemical and automobile industries, and now in the new technologies. Famous names such as the Lumière brothers, Marius Berliet, Joseph-Marie Jacquard, and Emile Guimet, are associated with this progress. At the dawn of the 21st century, Lyon has turned its eyes toward Europe, to regions Spanish, Italian, Swiss, and German -- without neglecting its ancient liaisons, located far from these, in Africa, the Near East and the Far East.
Jean Etèvenaux, specialist in the history of the Lyonnais, has entirely renewed this new edition of his Les Grandes Heures de Lyon. He holds a doctorate in history and a diploma from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques, and he is president of the Société des Ecrivains et du Livre Lyonnais et Rhônalpins. Since 1992 he has been editor-in-chief of Missi, and he teaches in various Lyon universities. He is the author of fifteen books.
