For any of you with enough French, or enough desire to keep up with your / the French, there is a very good ejournal on library and information and Internet / digital developments in France at,
This is L'Oeil du Système, produced by Laurent Bayle, Michel Fingerhut, and others of the team at the IRCAM / Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique / musique [please see a clarification in the FYI France issue of November 15, 1999] -- that is the Centre Pompidou music institute made famous by its association with Pierre Boulez, its Médiathèque, its fairly fantastic water fountain sculptures...
L'Oeil du Système is a weekly, presented and archived back to 1993 online. They will send you an email heads - up, which you can request at the site.
The W3 format is attractive: from a Netscape browser you get a "frames" two - column "newspaper - like" presentation, with interesting little images interspersed and attractive type - setting. Things do not work so well in IE -- my IE5 cannot handle the columns and a few of the images, and something goes wrong with the "frames" formatting at the top of the page -- but these are the usual Netscape vs. IE things, and the IRCAM text and functionality and most images come across well nevertheless. The issues are not too long -- the current issue runs 12 screens in a comfortable - sized font.
The current L'Oeil du Système issue -- Volume 6, Number 9, August 31 -- contains interesting items:
So, the IRCAM's L'Oeil du Système ejournal: regular reading, I suggest, would provide anyone who has rusty French a good means of practicing without having to dive into old Simenon and Balzac novels -- not that Simenon and Balzac are not good, but they are not for everyone -- and, particularly if you are in the library / information / online / music fields, the "boss" might frown on your reading Maigret at work, while this IRCAM site might fit in better...
And I'll bet that not too many of you, francophone or even French, knew that "shareware" translates as "partagiciels"...
