* Welcome to the "Oval Paradise"

Begun in 1887 by the architect Jean-Louis Pascal, the Salle Ovale was opened in 1936. Called the "Paradis ovale" it impressed visitors with its volume: 143 feet long, 59 feet high -- an enchanting space of mosaics, gold gilt, beautiful paintings, decorated walls, and unique furnishings! Beneath the glass ceiling woven with an elegant lacing of gilded vines, the highest part of the oval is pierced by sixteen bull's-eye windows, used for ventilation. Beneath each of these was inscribed the name of a city celebrated for its symbolic role in the history of civilizations and of libraries: Paris, Byzantium, Washington, Florence, Athens, Nineveh, Berlin, Alexandria, London, Babylon, Vienna, Thebes, Rome, Carthage, Beijing, Jerusalem.

* The works of the Salle Ovale

The renovation is needed to restore the spirit of the great room where the decoration has tarnished and degraded over time: paint cracked, mosaic darkened, gilding chipped, glass ceiling damaged, friezes with painted decorations encrusted with dirt...

To be cleaned and restored:

Cost of the works : 4.4 million euros
Duration of the work : 4 years

So turn-away from all the current "political" sound & fury to something cultural, of lasting value -- recall that last trip to Paris, or that original study-trip made there so long ago now... how cold it was outside, that time, and how greatly those inside-heaters helped... -- and help ensure that future generations will know and enjoy and benefit from this vast and greatly-endowed and generous institution!
