-- gradually, glacially -- so far 12 entries for the Bibliothèque Municipale de Caen, 30 entries for the Bibliothèque Nationale et Universitaire de Strasbourg, a pointer to the excellent and comprehensive bibliography already supplied for itself online by the Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon, and 200+ entries for the Bibliothèque Nationale de France --

Suggestions for additions, deletions, other improvements, are solicited from readers here, for this new effort as always.

Why "print" library bibliographies? Well, they may be disappearing... not so much the libraries as the "print" component of them... not that printed materials are not still being produced and read -- old and sore subject -- but libraries do so much more than just store those, nowadays.

Increasingly the digital world is upon us, in libraries as elsewhere, and amid the various digital distractions the old printed books do tend to get a little lost: "preserved", is the word used in polite company -- "squirreled away", to the less polite -- one way or the other, less-used than they were before, perhaps, and certainly less in the user-attention and budgetary limelights, for most of us in our modern "information behaviors".

In addition, though, they're simply very interesting, these library bibliographies... Like learning a new language, learning the use of any new media makes us more aware of aspects of the old. There are writers, now, who have fashioned entire new intellectual industries just from observations of user behavior with the new digital media. So, too, there are historians who have turned now to older user behavior, with the older print media, for novel insights as to both how those societies evolved and how the present may be evolving.

It is somewhat to encourage the latter "historians'" activity, then, that these print library bibliographies are being assembled and presented online here: in part "lest we forget" -- but also because a new look at the old print library world, now through our 21st Digital Century eyes, may reveal some interesting new things about the way we use information.
